Cruising to Koh Lanta

Yesterday we got the ferry to Koh Lanta and when we got there we got hassled about getting a tuk-tuk and a place to stay by everybody at the pier. When we walked towards town……. we found a cheep motorbike/scooter at a green house on the side of the road. The guy there was really nice and he was supposed to give us the scooter for 200 baht but we got it for 150. We had to put 4 bags on the motorbike while trying not to fall off, but in the end we managed to speed off to find clazy house.

We now remember one stretch of road off by heart because we went down that road 1,000,000 TIMES!!!!!!! Looking for it.

After that, we went and had lunch and OMG IT WAS MASSIVE!! And not Thai.

The person who worked there told us where clazy house was and after lunch, we got on the motor bike and sped off down the road to find it.

When we got there we went and got a bungalow and then we went to the Chill Out House and made a couple friends. Afterwards we went to the beach and I played some football with some kids and then we went for a swim in the sea right till it was dark.
Then we went to have dinner and while it was getting made I went and looked at the tree hut in Chill Out House. When I came back me and mum went back to the bungalow and SLEPT!!!!

HERMIT CRABS!!!!

Today I am going to be telling you about the hermit crab because if you’re walking home at night they’re all over the beach at Koh Jum.

There are 1100 species of hermit crabs. Its scientific name is Paguroidea.

The hermit crab uses empty shells to keep its abdomen from being attacked. This peculiar hobby of the hermit crab is because of its vulnerable backside and abdomen.

image

A vigorous competition often occurs between hermit crabs for shells because the availability of sizes are some times not in reach. Sometimes over the fighting of shells they are known to kill other hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs will line up biggest to smallest to get their shells renewed. The biggest one will get into the biggest shell, the next one will get into that guys shell and the third one will get into that guys shell and so on.

image

A group of hermit crabs will gang up on a hermit crab that looks like they have a better shell and take its home\shell away from it.

The little hermit crabs don’t live that long but some species can grow up to the size of a coconut and live 12-70 years.

If you keep a hermit crab as a pet you will find that it is useful in a household Aquarium as a scavenger because it eats algae and debris. I think they’re cute!!!!!! πŸ™‚

Diving, maths and thunderstorms.

This morning Simon showed me all of his diving equipment and his under water case for his camara. I got to breath through a regulator. (A regulator is a breathing pipe that divers use to get air from their tanks to their mouths). It makes me feel more excited to go learn scuba diving.

After that Simon and I went out to the beach to find out if we could make milleseconds. We started with a small clock and one after the other made bigger clocks and finally got to milleseconds. We made milleseconds with a piece of string, a stick and some maths. I won a game of carcassonne 2 times in a row. Carcassonne is a jigsaw puzzle basicly but its more fun and you get to put pepole on it after wards. I will get a game of carcassonne to bring home and I warn you. YOU WILL GET ADDICTED.

After we dined at Joy, Dad went home to sleep because he wasn’t feeling that well but when the storm that was brewing behind us struck, its first lightning bolt hit about 200 meters away from our blue bungalow. Helen and I were sitting over at Joy in Simon and Olgas bungalow when Dad said come back because he didn’t want us getting struck by lightning but we didn’t hear what he said and we thought that he was jumping for joy because there was a thunderstorm. Dad came over to get us and when we got back we saw this.
image

It was so awesome, the lightning hitting the water right off the shore. It was the closest any of us had ever seen before, IT WAS SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!

In the middle of the night when we were all asleep a huge branch fell on our roof and scared the flying fish out of me.

In the morning the thunderstorm was gone and I have one more thing to say. Its’ been the first lot of rain since we’ve been on Koh Jum.

After we had a great birthday dinner for Helen last night, we slept in this morning and cruised over to joy bungalows to have coffee and breakfast with Simon and Olga. I had some porridge and after that Simon told me about scuba diving. He told me about all of the fish that he had seen and since you can’t hear the other person they have to use hand signals. I find them very complicated but it works so I’m happy with it. After breakfast we went snorkeling and I saw alot of fish. I can name a new fish that I now know, its called a Hexagon grouper.

But when we got out we saw the boat going to Koh Lanta so we ran down the beach to Bo daeng to see if Mum and Tom were there. They were so we talked for a little bit and then we walked back had a little swim and then we had lunch and hung out at Simon and Olgas bungalow AND THEN THE RAIN CAME!!!!

It was a quick one but it cooled us off nicely.

Back at the Helen/Dad pad……..

The last week I’ve been at my mums and I’ve had a tour around the island. its’ been really fun but now I’m back at my dads and it’s Helens birthday.

She got for her birthday her brother and sister in law. It was a secret that we had to keep from her for three weeks. Just to see her face when they came running up the beach was so amusing. πŸ™‚Β  she was so surprised!!!! They came all the way from London for a week. They are now my uncle and auntie because Dad and Helen are now married.

Sadly when they arrived I was feeling a little bit blah in the stomach. Two days ago I got sick for a day and it didn’t feel nice. I’m feeling alot better now. Tonight we are all going out for dinner, Mum and Tom included.

Tomorrow, Mum might be going to Koh Lanta, an island in jumping fish range. We are going to go kayaking tomorrow out to the islandΒ the length of a blue whale away from Koh Jum.

Hopefully we will see the monkey that drinks beer out on the island. πŸ™‚ I know it’s a bit funny sounding, but it’s true.

Hanging out with mum and Tom.

This is really funny, every night something steals Tom’s eco soap! We think it’s a mouse or rat but it could be a squirrel. He takes it to his little stash behind the sink with all his other stolen goods. I decided to drill a hole in the soap, tie it to a bit of string then hang it from the shower and wait to see what happened. When we woke up we saw he’d chewed through the rope and eaten more of the soap and hid it back in his stash again. It was crack up when we found it.

I’ve been learning alot of survival skills from Tom. So far he’s taught me how to build a structure out of palm leaves that doesn’t leak. You weave the palm leaves over and over in a certain way then you attach them to your wooden structure and there you have it. He’s also shown me how to tie a number of different knots and some self defence fighting moves. Everybody that’s reading my blog I will see you someday, so I can show you the fighting moves then because it’s too hard to explain. I brought myself a hammock too, I bargained quite well with the lady and got it for a great price. I’ve been doing hammock acrobatics, it’s quite tricky.

image

Lately I’ve been learning some new games too and they’re really good traveling games because you can play them any were. One game is called Dame and the other one is called Mulle and they are so fun to play.

Island riding

Ive been meeting lots of travellers, heaps of them are from Germany and Russia.Β Β Robyns a farang (thats Thai for white man) he’s from America but hes been living here for over a year. He’s got his own long tail boat and kayak and motorbike and he’s a buddhist seaman. He said I can help him make a 4 seater catamaran out of pvc pipe to sail around the islands.

image

The other day me, mum and Tom rented a motorbike to go sightseeing around the island. It was a little scoopy. Β We all fitted on pretty easily, sometimes I’ve seen 2 adults and 4 kids on one bike! It was really fun and nice to have the cool wind in my face because it’s been so hot here. TheΒ rains must be coming soon.

We drove through lots rubber trees to other beaches and one had a big sign that said distances to heaps of different places around the world. Even to the moon 498,743 kms and sunburn 2 minutes. There was a pontoon out from the sign and it had a diving platform made from bamboo on it, so we swam out and did some flips on it.

On the way back home we stopped to get some fruit and the guy gave us some free mangoes but they had jumping maggots inside. I never knew that maggots could really jump like that. It was kindah funny.

Going snorkling.

We went on a boat trip with our new friends from Greece to Ko Pipi which is an island right across the way from Koh Jum. Most of the day I lay on the front of the boat and this is what the boat looked like.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When I was lying on the front I watched the prow slice through the waves like silk. The water was so clear I could see the bottom when it was about 5 meters down. When we got to Ko Pipi we went to a little town on land and we got pastry and an iced chocolate.

After that, we went to monkey bay and saw the monkeys and fed them bananas. It was really cool to watch them come down the cliffs to meet us on the beach. It was a good thing we brought a bag of bananas with us, they loved them! We got out of the boat and swam over with the bananas and the biggest monkey came over to me straight away because I had three bananas. I gave him one and he ran away to eat it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We then went to Maya bay which is a famous beach but you had to pay to get onto the beach. It was 200 Baht per person. We went snorkling there for a little bit and we saw some giant clams. There were heaps of colours, purple, green, yellow, blue and grey.

They let us stay two hours longer than we were meant to so that we could see the sunset when we arrived back at Koh Jum. When we arrived we saw Mum and Thomas walking down the beach and they hadn’t noticed us yet. So when we got to shore we gave them a surprise and told them about the day. It’s great to see my mum again.

Island living.

Hey there Hope you guys\girls are doing well.

Its pretty cool that we live on the beach but we have to walk to town which takes about 10 minutes. We have to go to town because we pay less for stuff there than on the beach. Because the beach is so far away they chargeΒ  you much more than in town. The town is very very small so we are going to eat at every shop over the month, plus its nice to give some money to the locals too.

One day we were walking around the first corner of the road back to our bungalow and saw AΒ Β  MASSIVEΒ Β  GROUPΒ Β  OFΒ Β Β  MONKEYS!!!!!!!!! There were 20, no there were 40, there were so many. We waited for ages watching the monkeys and then Helen came around the corner in a small scooter taxi. By the way, most of the taxis here don’t carge you because they are very friendly and kind.

Today we are going to be snorkling with some friends for the whole day. Its going to be so cool!!

Its’ been great here so far at Koh Jum…. Sabai!!Β‘!!!!
