Gliding to Koh Kood

Yesterday we woke up at our normal time at about 7:00 and we had chicken noodle soup for breakfast at the day market. I tried every spice on the table in it, and it still tasted great. A couple minutes after that a free taxi arrived at our guest house and we got a ride to the boat pier where the Koh Kood princess was waiting for us. The koh Kood princess is a boat that ships people from the main land to Koh Kood. Warning …it’s a very slow ride.

On the boat ride over I imagined that the whole boat was wooden and had no motor, just 7 sails.

When we were coming into the docks it already felt like home and when we were on our way to our home stay we got SOAKED:-) !!!!!!!!! AND POWDERED WITH WHITE SKIN STUFF.. (Talcum powder). Everyone is celebrating over here too.But when we got a bungalow our stuff dried out and on the way to the other bungalow we saw a snake on the road and he had a triangular head so he was poisonous.

Our bungalow is sitting on top of the water and it’s so amazing in the morning to watch the sun rise over the high tide through the mangrove trees, which the fish and hermit crabs swim around and hang out on.

So far is been great here on the island and it will be for 1 week and 6 days more!!!!

The long and hungry day.

A couple days ago we left Koh jum and went to Krabi. When we got there we went and got food because we were so hungry. After that we went and put our bags in our bedroom and after we got that done we went to the night market and got a huge portion of meat and meat sticks. When we got back home we went straight to bed because we had to wake up at 6:30!!!!!!

In the morning we woke up at 6:30 and we got a taxi to the Krabi airport to catch our flight.

When we got our flight, dad had problems with his guitar, and he had to put it under the plane because the people there didn’t care even though there was plenty of space on the plane. When we got to Bangkok his guitar was good still so we got another taxi to the bus station in Bangkok.

When we got to the bus station we went to the counter and got tickets to Trat and they said that we had 50 seconds until we had to go and so far we had’nt had any food and it was about 12.00 O.clock. Dad rushed to the snack bar and bought us some some snacks while Helen and I went to the bus.

When we got on the bus we devoured the snacks and waited 4 hours until we came to Trat……

4 hours later…..

We were coming into Trat and it was crazy because it was the welcoming of the monsoon season, and Thai new year, Sonkran;Water every where and water guns squirting. On the way to the bus station we saw……
People on the back of utes having water wars and that was just a tiny little bit of it. People standing on the side of the road with hoses and big buckets of water. When we got off the bus we got a blue taxi to where we were going to stay. On the way, we needed to put our rain coat over our bags because we got SOAKED!!!!!! when we got to our guest house we put our bags down and went and had a huge feast at the night market.

The sea eagle and snakes.

The other day we were riding along and we saw a big sign advertising snake shows. We went in to check it out, and got talking with the guy (who was kindah cool but a bit freaky) He showed us all the different snakes he had in concrete enclosures. There were jungle snakes, a couple of 5 metre long king cobras, and some other cobras as well as a big python. The guy was a bit mean to them, he poked them with a stick to make them move and they hissed and lurched at him. He kept telling us to come back tomorrow for the show and pay 500 baht, but we saw all the snakes for free and since we didn’t like the way he was treating them we decided not to go to the show. But it was cool to see the snakes. I got to hold one that was probably poisonous, but the guy said it was an ant eating snake. It was black and it had yellow eyes with lots of bumpy bits along it. The guy said that was from ants biting it, but I didn’t think so. I wrapped it around my neck, it felt scaley and its muscles were really strong.

After that we went down the road on our motorbike and had lunch at sunset bay which is way down the coast.Β  On the outside of the toilet wall there was a cage that had a sea eagle in it. He looked totally MAJESTIC! His eyes were unblinking, his beak was sharp, his talons were like razors.

The owner of the sea eagle was really nice to it, he put his hand into the cage and stroked the bird, but it hopped away after a little while. I gave him some of my chicken which he liked. And in two minutes all the crumbs that he dropped were covered with red ants. He looked like he wanted to be free, and it gave me the idea of getting my own pet hawk when we get back to NZ. I drew up a rough plan for the aviary that I want to build oneday, I’m working on the prototype now.

IMG_20150411_150237

It will have lots of undergrowth and greenery growing inside it, and I’ll have to prune the trees alot to keep them inside the enclosure.

IMG_20150411_143844775_HDR

It’s hard to see, but thats a pyramid shaped roof which will go on top of the rectangular shaped aviary room. I plan on learning falconry so I can have my own bird one day.

4 Islands Snorkelling trip

Yesterday we got picked up from our bungalow to go to the Old Town pier where we caught a long tail boat to the islands. We headed off but after half an hour we broke down on the way. So our capitan had to go swimming to redo the chain on the engine and in 10 minutes we were off again. Our first stop was an island with heaps of bats hanging from the cliffs. Those black bits are all clusters of bats.

IMG_20150408_101826246_HDR

Our second stop was for snorkelling in a little rocky bay. There were heaps of tiger fish, parrot fish and I saw a few dog fish too.

IMG_20150408_102758901

In our group of 9 tourists, one lady had a fish phobia and another lady couldn’t swim, so it was pretty funny watching them get in. Our next stop was THE EMERALD CAVE ON KOH MOOK ISLAND!!!! This was the highlight of the trip because we had to swim through a dark cave for 80 metres into an enclosed cove with high cliffs and jungle all around. Its a place where pirates used to stash their booty.

image

I took lots of photos with my underwater camera, but its not compatible with this tablet so i cant upload them right now.

Anyway, my mum was a little jumpsy while we were going thru the darkness of the cave,Β  and when we first went in we could see this bright turquoise light coming up from underneath the surface. When we got into the cove it was orange and red from all the people wearing life jackets. The guide took us out before it got to be high tide and we still just barely made it out under some of the underhangs. We had a big space to ourselves in the cave on the way out, and luckily we left because there were heaps of big tourist boats with loads more people coming in.

IMG_20150408_132433246_HDR

After that we went to anotherΒ island across the way for lunch. I jumped off the boat about 3/4’s of the way across and swam to shore. We snorkelled more after lunch then came back to Koh Lanta.

4 islands trip

On the way home in the truck we got fumed out by diesel!!!! It was Yuk! But apart from that we had an awesome day.

Koh Lanta Island exploring and caves

Yesterday we went driving around Koh Lanta island on our motorbikes, we did a big loop and on the way we stopped at a mangove forest and they tried to charge us 1,000 baht for a ride on a long tail boat to see the reforestation that they are doing there. We chose not to do it.

IMG_20150407_105758702

After that we went to a big ash tree on the side of the road for a little break. I saw a black and yellow lizard on the tree then when I hung from the tree, I got red ants all over me. They felt sticky and after that we carried on driving again and did the full loop back to where we were staying. We kept on driving and saw a sad elephant chained to a tree so we stopped and gave him some pats.

Then we went to an animal welfare place, and got to see all the dogs and cats that they rescue on the island. The local people arent very good at looking after animals very nicely here. They had 5 packs of dogs in different areas and we got to go into the puppy chamber. 185 animals got adopted from there last year and most of them were transported overseas. That’s pretty amazing I thought.

Mum and I went and explored a really amazing cave after that. It was a 40 minute walk through the jungle to get there. We had a guide with us and 2 other people, it didnt take long to get there because we talked the whole way.

IMG_20150406_175158448

Inside the cave had a really cool temperature, with high walls and roof. Β It echoed all the noises we made. We had to walk over bamboo bridges in there and go up and down little ricketty ladders. Sometimes the space the huge and other times we had to crawl through little parts to get out. In the last area we saw hundreds of bats hanging everywhere.

That morning we went to a nice restaurant and I got a…… Full English breakfast which is a pot of tea, (that mum had) 2 pieces of toast with alot of jam and butter, some streaky bacon, 2 over sized sausages, some baked beans and SCRAMBLED EGGS!!!!!!!! It was great! And not Thai!

Cruising to Koh Lanta

Yesterday we got the ferry to Koh Lanta and when we got there we got hassled about getting a tuk-tuk and a place to stay by everybody at the pier. When we walked towards town……. we found a cheep motorbike/scooter at a green house on the side of the road. The guy there was really nice and he was supposed to give us the scooter for 200 baht but we got it for 150. We had to put 4 bags on the motorbike while trying not to fall off, but in the end we managed to speed off to find clazy house.

We now remember one stretch of road off by heart because we went down that road 1,000,000 TIMES!!!!!!! Looking for it.

After that, we went and had lunch and OMG IT WAS MASSIVE!! And not Thai.
image

The person who worked there told us where clazy house was and after lunch, we got on the motor bike and sped off down the road to find it.
image

When we got there we went and got a bungalow and then we went to the Chill Out House and made a couple friends. Afterwards we went to the beach and I played some football with some kids and then we went for a swim in the sea right till it was dark.
Then we went to have dinner and while it was getting made I went and looked at the tree hut in Chill Out House. When I came back me and mum went back to the bungalow and SLEPT!!!!

HERMIT CRABS!!!!

Today I am going to be telling you about the hermit crab because if you’re walking home at night they’re all over the beach at Koh Jum.

There are 1100 species of hermit crabs. Its scientific name is Paguroidea.

The hermit crab uses empty shells to keep its abdomen from being attacked. This peculiar hobby of the hermit crab is because of its vulnerable backside and abdomen.

image

A vigorous competition often occurs between hermit crabs for shells because the availability of sizes are some times not in reach. Sometimes over the fighting of shells they are known to kill other hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs will line up biggest to smallest to get their shells renewed. The biggest one will get into the biggest shell, the next one will get into that guys shell and the third one will get into that guys shell and so on.

image

A group of hermit crabs will gang up on a hermit crab that looks like they have a better shell and take its home\shell away from it.

The little hermit crabs don’t live that long but some species can grow up to the size of a coconut and live 12-70 years.

If you keep a hermit crab as a pet you will find that it is useful in a household Aquarium as a scavenger because it eats algae and debris. I think they’re cute!!!!!! πŸ™‚

Diving, maths and thunderstorms.

This morning Simon showed me all of his diving equipment and his under water case for his camara. I got to breath through a regulator. (A regulator is a breathing pipe that divers use to get air from their tanks to their mouths). It makes me feel more excited to go learn scuba diving.

After that Simon and I went out to the beach to find out if we could make milleseconds. We started with a small clock and one after the other made bigger clocks and finally got to milleseconds. We made milleseconds with a piece of string, a stick and some maths. I won a game of carcassonne 2 times in a row. Carcassonne is a jigsaw puzzle basicly but its more fun and you get to put pepole on it after wards. I will get a game of carcassonne to bring home and I warn you. YOU WILL GET ADDICTED.
image

After we dined at Joy, Dad went home to sleep because he wasn’t feeling that well but when the storm that was brewing behind us struck, its first lightning bolt hit about 200 meters away from our blue bungalow. Helen and I were sitting over at Joy in Simon and Olgas bungalow when Dad said come back because he didn’t want us getting struck by lightning but we didn’t hear what he said and we thought that he was jumping for joy because there was a thunderstorm. Dad came over to get us and when we got back we saw this.
image

It was so awesome, the lightning hitting the water right off the shore. It was the closest any of us had ever seen before, IT WAS SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!

In the middle of the night when we were all asleep a huge branch fell on our roof and scared the flying fish out of me.

In the morning the thunderstorm was gone and I have one more thing to say. Its’ been the first lot of rain since we’ve been on Koh Jum.
